What is JPG and why convert it to PNG?

JPG is the most compatible format for photos: every phone, computer and website opens it. It uses lossy compression, so files are small, but it doesn't support transparency.

PNG stores the image losslessly and supports transparency. It's ideal for screenshots, logos and text, but for photos or scans it's much heavier than JPG.

Private by design

Most online tools upload your files to their servers. Not here: everything is processed in your own browser and nothing is ever sent anywhere. That's why you can safely use it with your ID, passport, payslips, medical reports or contracts.

When PNG is the right choice

  • Logos, scanned signatures and icons with a transparent background.
  • Screenshots with text that needs to stay sharp.
  • Programs or websites that specifically ask for PNG.

PNG has no quality setting: it keeps every pixel as it is. Converting a JPG to PNG doesn't restore lost quality, it only avoids losing more.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed inside your browser. Your files never leave your device.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no usage limits.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG saves the image losslessly, but it can't bring back detail the JPG already lost. It only avoids further loss in future edits.

Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?

Because PNG doesn't use lossy compression. It's normal for it to be several times larger than the original JPG.

Why does my iPhone take photos in HEIC?

Because the camera is set to High Efficiency, which saves space. You can change it in Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible so it saves JPG instead.

Is the photo's location data kept?

No. Only the image is saved, without EXIF metadata such as location or phone model. The orientation is applied to the image so it doesn't come out rotated.
