Split a PDF into 2 MB files

2 MB per file leaves room for multi-page scans. Split your PDF into parts that fit and keep every page exactly as it is.

1 · Document

2 · How to split

Check the limit on the form itself. 1 MB = 1,024 KB. If a single page is already bigger, it goes on its own and we'll tell you: in that case, compress the PDF first.

3 · Result

  1. See every page

When you open the PDF, thumbnails show you what's on each page.

  2. Choose how to split it

Specific pages, one per file, every N pages or by maximum file size.

  3. Download each part

Pages are copied as they are: no loss of quality and the text stays selectable.

Everything runs in your browser. Your document is never uploaded to any server.

  4. Check the size of each part and download them.

What's next?

What to expect with 2 MB parts

2 MB is 2,048 KB per part, double the most common limit. A text document usually needs very few parts, and a long colour scan as many as the weight of each page requires.

Average weight of a pagePages per part
50 KB40
100 KB20
200 KB10
500 KB4
1 MB2
2 MB1
6 MB1 (the page alone is already over the limit)

Rough figures: each part repeats the fonts and resources the pages share, so in practice it may hold a little fewer. The tool measures every part for real.

Private by design

Most online tools upload your files to their servers. Not here: everything is processed in your own browser and nothing is ever sent anywhere. That's why you can safely use it with your ID, passport, payslips, medical reports or contracts.

If a single page weighs more than 2 MB

A page can't be cut: if one alone is over the limit, it goes in its own file and we mark it so you can see it. To make it fit, compress that PDF with Compress PDF to 2 MB.

Tip

If your PDF is only a little over 2 MB, you may not need to split it: compress it to 2 MB and upload a single file, if the form prefers that.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed inside your browser. Your files never leave your device.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no usage limits.

Should I split or compress a 4 MB PDF for a 2 MB limit?

If the portal accepts several files, splitting keeps every page's quality. If it only accepts one, compress. For a PDF that's only slightly over the limit, compressing is usually enough.

Can I join the parts again later?

Yes. With Merge PDF you can put the parts back into one document, in any order.

What if a single page is over the limit?

That page goes in its own file and we mark it in red. To make it fit you'll need to compress it, for example with our compress PDF tool.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are into the new PDF, without turning them into images or recompressing them. The text stays selectable.

Does it work with protected PDFs?

If the PDF is encrypted or asks for a password, it can't be split here. Open it in your PDF reader, remove the protection or save a copy without it, and try again.
