Split a PDF into 5 MB files

5 MB per part is a generous limit: most PDFs only need two or three parts. Also handy for sending a big PDF by email across several messages.

1 · Document

2 · How to split

Check the limit on the form itself. 1 MB = 1,024 KB. If a single page is already bigger, it goes on its own and we'll tell you: in that case, compress the PDF first.

3 · Result

  1. See every page

When you open the PDF, thumbnails show you what's on each page.

  2. Choose how to split it

Specific pages, one per file, every N pages or by maximum file size.

  3. Download each part

Pages are copied as they are: no loss of quality and the text stays selectable.

Everything runs in your browser. Your document is never uploaded to any server.

What's next?

What to expect with 5 MB parts

5 MB is 5,120 KB per part. With that much room, a PDF of a few dozen pages fits in one or two parts; long colour scans are the ones that need more.

Average weight of a pagePages per part
50 KB102
100 KB51
200 KB25
500 KB10
1 MB5
2 MB2
6 MB1 (the page alone is already over the limit)

Rough figures: each part repeats the fonts and resources the pages share, so in practice it may hold a little fewer. The tool measures every part for real.

Private by design

Most online tools upload your files to their servers. Not here: everything is processed in your own browser and nothing is ever sent anywhere. That's why you can safely use it with your ID, passport, payslips, medical reports or contracts.

If a single page weighs more than 5 MB

A page can't be cut: if one alone is over the limit, it goes in its own file and we mark it so you can see it. To make it fit, compress that PDF with Compress PDF to 5 MB.

Tip

To send it by email in several messages, check your provider's limit: an attachment grows a little when it's encoded for sending, so leave a margin or use slightly smaller parts.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed inside your browser. Your files never leave your device.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no usage limits.

Is it good for sending a big PDF by email in parts?

Yes, if your email limits the size of each message: split into parts of 5 MB or less and send each one in a message. Check your provider's limit.

How many pages fit in 5 MB?

It depends on how heavy each page is: at 100 KB per page, about 51; at 500 KB, about 10. The table above gives you the rough count.

What if a single page is over the limit?

That page goes in its own file and we mark it in red. To make it fit you'll need to compress it, for example with our compress PDF tool.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are into the new PDF, without turning them into images or recompressing them. The text stays selectable.

Does it work with protected PDFs?

If the PDF is encrypted or asks for a password, it can't be split here. Open it in your PDF reader, remove the protection or save a copy without it, and try again.
