Compress PDF to 5 MB

Get your document under 5 MB, a common limit on email attachments that would otherwise bounce. Free, and your file is never uploaded to any server.

1 · Document

2 · Maximum size

1 MB = 1,024 KB. If the form doesn't say, leave a little room under the limit.

3 · Result

  1. Lossless first

We rebuild the PDF's internal structure. If that's enough, the text stays selectable.

  2. If not, exact size

We turn each page into an image and find the highest resolution and quality that fit your limit.

  3. Download and done

You see the final size against the limit and a preview before saving.

Everything runs in your browser. Your document is never uploaded to any server.

How to compress a PDF to 5 MB

  1. Drop your PDF into the box above or click to choose it.
  2. Check the maximum size is set to 5 MB (it's already filled in).
  3. Click Compress and wait a few seconds.
  4. Check the preview and click Download PDF.

Where is a PDF under 5 MB required?

A 5 MB limit is common on:

  • Email attachments that would otherwise bounce.
  • Moodle, Google Classroom and other learning platforms.
  • Online registries that accept complete case files.
  • Sending presentations and reports through messaging apps.

With this much room, lossless compression is usually enough and the text stays selectable. If not, a high resolution of around 150 dpi is used.

Private by design

Most online tools upload your files to their servers. Not here: everything is processed in your own browser and nothing is ever sent anywhere. That's why you can safely use it with your ID, passport, payslips, medical reports or contracts.

Tip

If the PDF is heavy because of embedded photos, compressing it here usually cuts it by more than half without any visible difference.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed inside your browser. Your files never leave your device.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no usage limits.

How do I get my PDF under 5 MB?

Choose the file, keep 5 MB as the maximum size and click Compress. Lossless compression is tried first; if that's not enough, the best resolution and quality that fit are found.

Will the text still be selectable?

If lossless compression is enough, yes. If the file has to shrink further, pages are turned into images and the text is no longer selectable, although it reads exactly the same.

What if it can't reach the size?

It means the document would become unreadable at that size. Split the PDF into several parts or check whether the form accepts more than one file.

Is 1 MB 1,000 or 1,024 KB?

Here 1 MB = 1,024 KB. Some portals count 1,000. If you're close to the limit, pick a slightly smaller one to be safe.
